Well last night I played in a duo configuration with the great Bassist Ksawery Wójciński at a new outpost for Contemporary Art here in Warsaw, (part of CSW Zamek Ujazdowski) the AIR Lab.
It was a small intimate concert in a very live sounding space - a typical gallery scenario. For around 35 minutes we created what felt like exciting and a different form of music than what we may ordinarily do. At times it felt closer to classical music in sound and intent than jazz or improvisation. This may be due to a number of factors.. 1. The room itself having a huge influence - in a good way. 2. The actual intent of the concert and context. 3. Keeping the sound intimate and close rather than projecting as much as possible. 4. The small but focussed audience. It may also be likened to a 1970's ECM sound, than anything more contemporary. I have no problem with this influence appearing through my playing, as some of these records from this label had a huge influence in exposing me to many forms of music - instruments and possibilities. Again after meeting as a duo we still need to record ourselves properly in such a context as something generally extraordinary happens when we meet. This also bodes well for our trio dates with Tim Daisy over the next week. 4/11/2022 02:09:45
